RGT Cycling App

WE’RE CHANGING

In a nutshell

RGT has changed the way you enjoy and experience virtual cycling. The team has simplified how you connect and ride with other people, and has improved the stability and user experience.

The RGT App is now a standalone app. This means no extra devices are required to take a ride, join an event, or start a workout.

The RGT Remote is a new, completely optional, lightweight mobile application that can be used to complement your ride on RGT. It keeps the additional benefit of being able to control and navigate RGT when you’re not close to your main device, such as PC, Mac or Apple TV.

The RGT Website is where you now create and manage events, and make changes to your account.

Why these changes?

We’re always looking for ways to improve your experience. We want RGT to be easy to set-up so that you can jump on and start riding in minutes.

With the new single app system, you get all the original benefits of two apps, but you only need one to ride.

Moving some features to the website also makes it easier for you to find, join and create events, and to manage your profile settings.

Background

Roughly translated from French to English “Échappée” means to break away or to escape. It is for that reason we decided to name the biggest update to RGT Cycling since launch – Project Échappée.

Project Échappée focused on a response to the feedback from RGT users that outlined a need to simplify the entire experience when joining RGT for a ride.

Project Échappée would be a breakaway and escape from the traditional two app approach we have been known for.

The project also gave the team the opportunity to clean up the code and make it lighter and easier to develop in the future, increasing the speed we can deliver new features.

More Detail…?

Firstly, and probably most importantly, RGT is now available as a standalone app for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android devices and Apple TV. You no longer need to combine the Mobile App and the Screen App.

We have developed a brand new RGT Remote App. This app ensures you can still benefit from the “on the bike” control that was possible with the old setup, without making it a requirement.

We have significantly changed how your equipment connects to RGT Cycling. Now your devices, such as PC, Mac or Tablet, connect directly to the hardware equipment you are riding on, such as your trainer or smart bike.
Don’t worry if you do not have Bluetooth on your PC, you can also use the RGT Remote as a bridge for your devices.

The user experience with which you may be familiar has been redesigned. It has been improved to incorporate the feedback we have taken from our users over the last two years and makes navigation and user interface more intuitive. You can now interact with RGT Cycling without the need for a second device.

RGT Cycling has finally joined the DOT COM boom! Well… we have always had a website but it served as a signpost for new users and not much else. This update also launches with a new Web Portal where you can complete some non-ride tasks like updating account details, manage subscriptions and create and sign up for events.

We’ve also added some little Easter eggs for you to hunt out and enjoy/lose

While I welcome the change, the rollout is extremely confusing. I don’t see any “RGT App” for my Mac (as opposed to “screen app”) either in the downloads section or on the apple app store. Also, my android app has no update available.

Is this change scheduled for the future and not active yet? What gives?

    • Tim Sinclair says:

      Hi Paul
Everything new is locked and hidden until sometime tomorrow (15th). Sorry, if you have found this confusing. All FB posts have referred to the 15th. 🙂

  2. Peter Stevenson says:

This is really poorly explained. You’re not providing any dates for when these new features become available. the post gives the impression that this is available now and as such I should be able to download and use the windows app as a standalone. This does not appear to be the case.

    • Tim Sinclair says:

      Hi Peter.
Sorry if you have had problems with this.
I’m not sure where you have seen the press release, but all members got an email saying:
From tomorrow, 15th November, RGT will change ……. The new standalone software will be available then 🙂
The FB posts also referred to the 15th.
      Best wishes…

This is great. Well done to the team at RGT. Just installed and found my subscription on my PC. It’s made things a lot simpler. Looking forward to my next ride tomorrow.

  4. anoynmous coward says:

so maybe someone can explain how to convert a setup using an android phone for control and an ipad for display into this new world, i.e.
andoid phone: rgt app -> ???
    ipad: rgt screen -> ???

  5. David says:

Logged in today and tried to ride quickly (as usual), unfortunately the lack on “onboarding” via any of the existing apps was non-existent. After about 5 mins I figured it out, but I consider myself to be tech literate and I’m sure others will have significant challenges. Once the proper apps were downloaded, installed (macOS + iOS) I was setup pretty painlessly. I like the ability to connect via bluetooth to either my laptop or the mobile device and the interface is very clear about what I’m using which I love. The move away from requiring two distinct devices is a great one and I’m glad you cleaned up some tech debt in the process. BUT one major flaw I experienced was that I wasn’t able to remove focus from the app on whichever device I was using to connect via bluetooth. For example if I connected my devices to the iOS remote app, as soon as I switched apps (not closed) I temporarily lost the connection until I switched back. I switched bluetooth to connect to macOS, and the same behavior was experienced. As soon as I removed focus away from RGT app the bluetooth connection would drop. I love to multitask, i.e. bring up Netflix on my laptop or text on my phone while riding so this situation forces me to basically leave one device dedicated just for bluetooth and no other use while riding. I hope this is a bug and something you can fix. Thanks!

    Hello,
Since the update I’m not able to interact with my iPhone coz the font is far too small I can’t read it, very disappointed.

    • Tim Sinclair says:

The new phone app is certainly a challenge for your eyesight and is more suited to use on an iPad in my opinion – it’s an option for those that need it and obviously replaced the old control app that was never used for riding anyway.
The new RGT Remote is great when you get to use it and supplements the standalone desktop app very well.
Depending on what it is you are finding challenging o the standalone phone app, you may also like to look at the RGT Toolbox etc here http://www.user.rgtcycling.com

    Congratulation to the new App!
Yesterday I took a ride and first i was surprised because I havent heard about the change and my mobile app updated automatically. So I choose a ride on my mobile app and nothing happened on my tablet. I downloaded the new windows app and installed it with the windows app installer! It works!
And now to the reason for my post.. I mist the profile for the whole distance 🙁
In the old version it was on the bottom of the screen so you could have senn what waits for you on the whole ride and you could see where the extra sections are waiting, I missed that in the new app. There is only a small section shown.

    • Patrick says:

I was surprised to see this go as well. It was extremely useful and I looked everywhere to see if it was an option that was disabled but to no avail 🙁

  8. Pete says:

Why, when buying a subscription, I cannot ride my trainer alternately with my brother? When I buy a PC game, I can always create two, three or even more character / user profiles on it. When I buy a Netfix subscription, I also have user profiles available. What is it about this “game” that it can’t be the same here. Just because Zwift has imposed such rhetoric, all other manufacturers of this type of software must follow suit?
One device – one account – several users. Think about it, and you can gain a big advantage over the competition that does not. Thank you for making free access available, for now. I’d like to buy premium, but that’s too much for me at the moment. Earnings are not the same everywhere in the world.

  9. whynot says:

so far the two apps (on my android phone and my android tablet) worked fine. So i don’t see the necessarity to change. But – time goes on and changes are done in every app..
But – i tried to ride on my new magic road. But whenever i tried to start a magic road the mobile app told me to log in. But i already was logged in. There was no way to ride the magic road. After having started the app again i was able to ride a standard course. But the magic road still showed me the same message: i had to log in.

I don’t know whether other users have the same difficulties. But on Andoid there was no way to make the magic roads work 🙁

    regards from Germany
    Stefan

Did you get a message at any time saying that the Quick Ride Event Will Soon Be Available?
Did you update the Phone App from the App Store where you first registered when joining RGT to activate your subscription across all devices?
What does it say under Menu/My Account for your subscription status? 🙂
If you are still having problems please reach out to support@rgtcycling.com who can check your account status against your registered RGT email 🙂

First I wished that the new changes would have been more tested and released as a beta, not force everyone to make the change. When everything was started to work without glitches, you changed everything. And from my point of view (1+ year user) the changes are not improving my experience. So let’s start:
    – the mobile app that is screen app now, ok, good idea, bad implementation, it’s just the PC app shoved into a mobile platform -> 15-25fps -> bad experience, the 3D setup should have been optimized, c’mon, in 2005 we had better looking games with less hardware. The Zwift mobile screen app works better. So I won’t use it in this setup and I think a lot of users too, a lot of effort for minimal improvement.
    – the remote app, wow, who designed that? it’s really a big downgrade from the remote app that was before, the old app was great, the new app sucks big time from a UX point of view, it’s ok for internal beta, but not for users. Again, changes that don’t improve the setup, instead made things worse…
    – and finally the windows app… on my Windows it wouldn’t start, just the blank violet screen and nothing, no error, nothing… because of the forced changes, I had to skip a workout, after 30 min of figuring out how to install the new mobile app, the new remote app, the new windows app, that did not work… I had to skip the workout, this should never happen, it never happens with Zwift, I think they move slower and don’t break things. Today after 1h I figure it out what was (I did not contact support because the app didn’t gave me any error and what was I to say? hmmm the app does not start… and start that useless process, do you have the OS up to date? The GPU drivers? Did you disabled the antivirus… your app needs to communicate more! error codes, messages, if something is wrong, it should say something, not shove it under the rug) Anyway, the app did not start because I have Windows 10 N and it does not come with “media pack” (aka codecs) and the dam app needs to show that useless intro video, because it didn’t had the codec it just hangs, no error, nothing! The programmers should have added an error message on this case, but who has time for this? Move fast!…. Finally, when I had to skip the workout, I canceled the subscription, I can’t pay for something that is broken or gets broken from time to time. I hope the info here will be useful in the future.

    • Tim Sinclair says:

      Hi Adrian
The mobile app you need a microscope for – granted 😉 The main intention for the mobile app is to used on tablets – in the same way that other Virtual Cycling Apps can be. The FPS is limited by the graphics capability of the phone.
The remote app will be under constant development. It looks a bit basic at the moment, but it works. There are features that need to be added and they will come…
Nothing has been shoved under any rugs – RGT has always been open and honest about any issues. https://www.rgtcycling.com/system-requirements/ Windows 10 Version 14393.0 or Higher sadly does not encompass Windows 10 N . I will pass that back to the team to see if a note might be added to the system requirements page about that along with your other comments. Perhaps contact them yourself by emailing support@rgtcycling.com . It’s very sad that you have found it necessary to cancel your subscription, as given the chance you could have been offered so much help. If you do want to give RGT a go again – please give us the chance to work with you to improve your experience wherever possible 🙂 Best wishes…
